But the simple fact is, there's something immensely satisfying about having your character lay down the Smite on a gargantuan ancient dragon doling out 181 HP worth of hurt on him in two rounds.
(This is schroedingerbat, but it won't let me post using OpenID, so I'm trying anonymous. Keeps giving "Invalid return_to"...)
I'm happy that my character contributed to the carnage by lowering the beast's AC a good 7 or 8 points and buffing your sword up to the point that it bypassed his DR.
Let's give it up for the utility mage! :)
Seriously, though, our highly successful takedown of an ancient blue was a fine example of teamwork. Heck, we even wound up with two characters who have (semi-)legitimate claims to the killing blow!
My character is a 14th level Paladin, with a +2 Longsword that does an additional +2d6 against Evil things.
I had the following spells up helping my cause: Find the Gap (Smite's best friend), Fell the Greatest Foe (another +3d6 damage due to our respective size differences), and Divine Favor (+3 to hit, +3 Damage). My first strike was a charge backed with Smite and Divine Might and Rhino's Rush (effectively makes a charge attack a critical). First strike hit for 87 damage.
Second strike, all the same except no Rhino's Rush. But I critted.
Honestly, Find the Gap made all the difference, since it turned my first attack of each round into a Touch Attack. Given that the dragon was AC 53, it was the only way I could hurt him.
